About

Experimental design artist Thomas Buckley and their collaborative studio of sensory makers present Recollect, an interactive and unique new work made specifically for ArtHouse Jersey. Alongside a team of local volunteers, closely held and precious memories from real people of advanced years have been borrowed and translated into sensory, interactive experiences. Working in collaboration with Age Concern the artist and volunteers have together built relationships, discovered and translated the real stories of people who call Jersey home.

Recollect worked with local volunteers who were trained in sensory memory collection. The cohort explored ways to find out more than information by asking if a memory had a feeling, a sound, a smell, a taste. Through training volunteers learnt how to use sensory mediums to encourage forwards memories around a specific topic.

Meeting each week with one of the islands elders they built trust and friendships.  They talked about special moments and fond memories as well as life's struggles.

I was interested in joining this project because I like to be involved in the community and I think art is a powerful tool for bringing people together. I don't have much contact with the older community so I am excited to make a new friend and learn something new from them!

I enjoy the company of those who have vast expanse of life experiences which I learn from.
I like to give my time to those who have given theirs to so many others in their lives.

As a speech and language therapist and researcher I have spent many years listening to the stories of our elders and helping people with communication difficulties to explore their experiences. I'm excited to see those memories become art through not just words but,  their senses.

As an archivist I work with the written and photographed pieces of the historical jigsaw. I was interested to participate in the project because of the opportunity to talk with an older member of our community and to play a part in the presentation of memories in such a creative way.

MEMORY BAR

Alongside an exhibition  the project has inspired a unique cocktail experience - where briefly the memories of Jersey's elders will be seen through the lens of immersive theatre. A work of fiction inspired by real memories.
